Homeowner Sought Protection Order Before Fatal Standoff at South Omaha Home

A protection order filed on June 2, 2026, by the owner and roommate at a residence located at 2713 S 19th Street alleges that Matthew Strain failed to vacate the property after being asked to leave by June 1.

According to the filing, the homeowner attempted to check on a room in the residence when he discovered Strain inside. The homeowner alleged that Strain told him that if he entered the room, he would shoot him. The filing further states that Strain told the homeowner he could remain at the residence for 90 days and that the homeowner would have to sue him to remove him.

The homeowner stated that he left the residence, took cover behind a large tree, and called 911.

According to the protection order, Omaha police officers responded and attempted to contact Strain by knocking on the door multiple times. The homeowner stated that officers reported hearing Strain charge two firearms and directed the homeowner to leave the second floor of the residence. The filing states that officers continued attempts to de-escalate the situation, but Strain allegedly refused to respond or open the door.

The homeowner stated that officers later spoke with him outside the residence to gather background information and advised him to seek a domestic violence protection order.

The protection order also provides additional context regarding the living arrangement. According to the filing, the homeowner met Strain approximately four years ago at the Omaha VA complex. The homeowner stated that Strain told him he was a 33-year veteran of the Marine Corps who was not receiving a military pension because of a paperwork issue.

The filing states that the two lived together without significant issues until Strain began a relationship with a woman he met online. According to the homeowner, the woman later moved into the residence, and disagreements began over decorating and household items.

As a result of those disagreements, the homeowner stated that he provided Strain and the woman with an informal written notice giving them 30 days to vacate the property.

The homeowner alleged that after receiving the notice in late April, Strain directed what the filing describes as a “hateful, swear-filled rant” toward him, including statements about ways he wanted the homeowner to die.

The filing further alleges that when the homeowner asked at the end of May when Strain planned to leave the residence, he later received a text message stating that he “shouldn’t worry about it” and that he could “die alone.”

The protection order was granted on June 3, 2026. Court records show the order included provisions requiring Strain's removal from the residence and the surrender of firearms.

Strain was killed during a standoff at the residence after authorities stated he fired at officers on June 2nd, 2026.
