On Saturday, May 16th, at 5:03 a.m. Omaha Police officers responded to a shooting call at 3515 N 93rd Ave. in North Central Omaha. Officers were notified that a 6-year-old boy was shot.
Upon arrival, officers were flagged down by Fabian Jefferson, 27, who was standing outside on the West side of the apartments in the grass, police said. Jefferson advised that he had been shot and that there was also a child shooting victim inside. Jefferson reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to his left thigh, according to the police report.
Jefferson told officers that an unknown male attempted to break in while he was inside the apartment. Jefferson could not provide officers a description of the suspect and stated that the suspect was not on scene.
While speaking with Jefferson, one of the responding officers learned that he was the suspect in the shooting. Jefferson would not provide further details of the incident, according to the police report. He was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center for his injuries. Jefferson was later booked into Douglas County Corrections for felony assault.
The boy was also taken to the Nebraska Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.
Police have not disclosed the relationship between Jefferson and the boy.
The mother of the boy, 36-year-old Michelle Sides, was also arrested for child abuse. Further details about her arrest were not immediately available.
