Omaha, NE — July 2, 2025 — The Douglas County Department of Corrections marked a major milestone in its ongoing expansion with a topping-out ceremony for its new Mental Health Addition. The event celebrated the placement of the final steel beam in the construction of the three-story, 35,000-square-foot facility.
Designed to provide a more therapeutic environment for individuals in custody with severe mental health needs, the new addition will feature 80 beds dedicated to treating those experiencing acute mental health crises, undergoing drug and alcohol detoxification, or placed on suicide precautions.
The project is part of a broader effort to improve mental health services within the correctional system. Construction is expected to be completed by December 2026.
